CYP19A1 is a gene that encodes for a cytochrome P450 enzyme, aromatase, which catalyzes many reactions involved in drug metabolism and synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids (R). 

This gene is important for sexual development because it catalyzes the last steps of estrogen biosynthesis. It is present during differentiation of sex organs for species with temperature-dependent sexual differentiation (R). 

It is also shown to help protect the brain in mice and finches by reducing cell death during brain injuries (R).
